Top Five: Animal Habitats at Cincinnati Zoo

 Hello,

It’s no secret that I am a huge animal lover and spend a large portion of my time helping out the animal welfare team at Cincinnati Zoo. I love that so much effort is put into ensuring that each individual has what they need for food/enrichment/socialization/etc. it’s also very reassuring to hear from people like Luis Paolo that the work we are doing to ensuring genetic diversity through the different species survival programs and rehabilitation programs is having current successes with repopulating endangered species back into the wild ecosystems.

Here are my top five habitats that I always try to stop by whenever I get a chance:

1. Kangaroo

These guys just make me so happy and it’s really fun to have a habitat where everyone can wander through, with supervision, and experience these gorgeous individuals without barriers.

2. Manatee

This is one of the most successful rehabilitation programs with the manatees changing out every six months or so to be released back into the gulf after being found orphaned (very common in hurricane season unfortunately). They’re just so stinking cute and there are so many fun facts about them that delight the kids. Did you know that they use their farts to help them swim? 😂

3. Elephant

These guys have such wonderful big personalities, especially the little boys. It’s so fun to see them socialize and play. I’m really looking forward to their swimming adventures this summer in the new ponds.

4. Wolf 🐺

I’m still a cold weather Alaska girl at heart and so even though the wolves at the zoo are Mexican wolves, I’m still just such a huge fan of stopping by and saying hello to them. They have such inspiring behaviors seeing them interact with each other and with their habitat. It’s really cool and it’s also just really great to see others learning to love and appreciate them, reducing the negative stigmas and hopefully the harmful attitudes that kill so many every year.

5. Giraffe 🦒

This one is based both on the fact that I’ve spent so much time doing observations on these guys, especially Zeke with his cheeky behaviors, and my two boys intense love of them. It’s hard to truly love a species that you never experience and so I’m so grateful that my boys, while travel to various African countries might not be possible, can still go on a morning walk to feed a giraffe every week. It’s such a unique experience and also just also wonderful to know that these experiences will help shape their lives and their commitment to saving wildlife and wild places around the world as they grow into men.

That’s all for today!

💛Jessie
